The name of Monsooned Malabar coffee beans came from the harvested coffee beans that were exposed to the monsoon rains.
A 19th century ship transports coffee beans to America
In the 19th century, coffee was transported by sea from India to Europe in the wooden sailing vessels. It would travel for months. During the transportation, coffee beans changed their color to pale yellow due to the sea winds and humidity and became brittle. Coffee beans would change both their size and flavor, acquiring the unique chocolatey flavor and sweet and spicy taste.

Modern transportation is not as long and coffee beans are protected from the weather and humidity which leads to a loss of their unique ‘monsoon’ flavor. An alternative process was invented to bring almost the same characteristics to the ordinary coffee beans.

Interesting facts about the coffee cultivation
There are various methods of planting coffee trees. The traditional one is to place a lot of coffee seeds in one hole at the beginning of the rainy season. But this method is not very productive because of the loss of about 50% of the seeds as almost half fail to sprout.
The other one is more effective and is commonly used in Brazil. They raise seedlings first in the greenhouses and then plant them outside at the age of 6 to 12 months. Regular fungicide and insecticide treatments are very important. It’s possible to intercrop coffee with corn, rice, beans during the first years of cultivation.
Coffee bean plant
The area between The Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn is known as ‘Coffee Belt’ where coffee plants are grown in over 80 counties in the world. The
coffee plant lives for 60-70 years.
The most well-known coffee species are Arabica coffee and Robusta coffee. Robusta contains 40-50% more caffeine than arabica and tends to be bitter.
Currently, there are over 2000 craft coffee roasters in the US alone that create various blends to cater to the most sophisticated coffee lovers each day (Including us at Couloir Art).
